Hidden Britain: Eel Pie Island, London
With all the overhanging greenery along south-west London’s stretch of the Thames, it is easy to miss Eel Pie Island. Reached by a footbridge from Twickenham, the island was the site of the Eel Pie Hotel, which went from hosting ballroom dancing in the 1920s to gigs from The Rolling Stones in the 1960s. The island is still a hotbed of creativity, being the home to 26 artists’ studios, which open up to the public on June 23 and 24. www.eelpie.org
