Things to do this week in England
PiL
Having reformed on funds that the acerbic Sex Pistols singer John Lydon (pictured) raised by doing a Country Life butter ad in 2009, this post-punk outfit is now ready to tour around the country. Standon Calling
This indie-infused festival ropes in Death In Vegas, Beardyman, Fat Freddy’s Drop and !!! (Chk Chk Chk) for their only UK festival show. Fancy dress is de rigueur so bring along the tutu, the face paint and the glitter. Standon, Hertfordshire, August 3-5, www.standon-calling.com
International Beer Day
Roll up to your nearest pub or brewery, or simply gather your mates for a good old drink around the BBQ to celebrate the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world, and third only to water and tea. Pubs, clubs, breweries and gardens across the country (and the world), August 5 www.internationalbeerday.com
Family Photography Workshop
Put the camera in your children’s hands for this free workshop suitable for kids up to 12 years old. Held by one of the first specialist photography galleries in the country, it’s the perfect chance for your kids to get snappy. Impressions Gallery, Bradford, August 4, www.impressions-gallery.com
Thomas Houseago: Where The Wild Things Are
Survey the bold creations of this rising sculpture star at a show of his bronze and plaster works. Referencing modernism and African art, Houseago also takes his cue from music, cartoons and science fiction – notably, Darth Vader. Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich July 31–January 27, www.scva.ac.uk
Last Night Of The Proms
After six races over the famous Derby racecourse, sprawl yourselves on picnic rugs for the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra’s performance of classics from the Last Night of the Proms programme. And yes, that does mean Elgar. Epsom Downs Racecourse, August 2, www.epsomdowns.co.uk
Time Travellers Go... Heroes & Villains
Ever fancied the life of a highwayman? You too can say ‘Stand and deliver’, and your training starts here. Take part in a musket drill, listen to the legends of our favourite rogues, and plan an ambush. Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, until August 3, www.english-heritage.org.uk
Hidden Britain: Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, London
This huge, overgrown cemetery was Europe’s first wholly nondenominational burial ground. The founders of the Salvation Amy are buried here, along with anti-slavery campaigners, dissenting ministers, and one mass grave after nearby Coronation Avenue was bombed during WWII. In and around the burnt-out gothic chapel is a thriving ecosystem, including butterflies, a variety of birds, and – of course – bats. www.abney-park.org.uk
