Things To Do This Week... in England
London: The Near and the Elsewhere (exhibition), PM Gallery & House
www.ealing.gov.uk/pmgalleryandhouse The recession has left an indelible imprint on the fabric of our cities, as well as the inside of our wallets. Evocatively titled, The Near and the Elsewhere is an international exhibition examining the ruins and scarred cityscapes left behind by the downturn, with nary a lovely tree or bush in sight. Pictures of pretty flowers just aren’t moody and urban enough for these troubled times.
On UK tour: Steve Hughes
The Junction, Cambridge, January 27, to be followed by nationwide tour, www.stevehughes.net.au With all the subtlety he learned as a heavy metal drummer, Aussie comic Steve Hughes will spear the establishment with his uniquely caustic brand of humour during his ‘Big Issues’ tour. Dear Steve: we’ll spear you too for nicking our name. Grrrr.
Woking: The Lewis and Mary Elton Art Collection
The Lightbox, Woking, January 10-29, www.thelightbox.org.uk Donated by Ben Elton’s parents, this collection of previously unseen works on paper by Picasso, Chagall, Klee and Cocteau were paid for entirely by the reparations given to them as Holocaust survivors. Which is a far better gift to the world than Ben was.
Brighton: Vive La France! Festival
Brighton, January 26, www.meltingvinyl.co.uk This Gallic-themed festival showcases the best of French music, as well as the fine culinary produce of our European neighbours. So if the tunes don’t appeal, there will be plenty of wine and cheese to throw down your neck in that unmistakably British way. Sacre bleu!
On UK tour: Seann Walsh
Didcot Cornerstone, January 21; Worcester Marrs Bar, January 26 Seann Walsh has overcome the stigma of having an extra ‘n’ in his name to become one of the country’s most hotly tipped comedians. After drawing comparisons to Dylan Moran and winning several awards, even dodgy spelling can’t halt this young buck’s dizzy rise.
