Resolutions Fostering Service - A Big Issue Cymru Big List Subscriber
Resolutions Fostering Service is a partnership of four local authorities: Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil and Vale of Glamorgan. The service specialises in offering planned placements for young people aged 10-17 years, who present challenging behaviour. The scheme’s manager, Mandy Jenkins, explains more.
Can you explain more about what your organisation does?
In 1993, there was a Remand Fostering Scheme in Mid Glamorgan which offered accommodation to young people as an alternative to a remand into custody. Following reorganisation in 1996 and changes in 2001, the scheme underwent significant changes and was renamed Resolutions Fostering Service. Resolutions is an innovative service which provides a high quality dedicated service to young people. The four authorities combine resources to create a first class fostering service. We are committed to working in partnership so we can provide stable and caring environments for young people.
What are your goals?
- To provide high quality, well-supported local foster placements
- To provide a safe and stable home for children and young people
- To improve the life-chances of young people who have to be looked after away from their families
- To increase the number of foster carers so we can better match young people with carers
- To provide comprehensive advice and support to our carers
- To continue to work positively with or partner agencies
Why is your company a part of the Big Issue Cymru’s Big List?
We support The Big Issue Cymru because they work with a diversity of people covering a variety of important issues. They continue to offer vulnerable people opportunities, as well as help them take control of their lives. Also The Big Issue ensures that the voice of young people is heard and equally represented.
How does the ethos of your company fit in with that of the Big Issue Cymru?
The ethos of Resolutions is very similar to that of The Big Issue. Resolutions provides a fostering service aimed at young people, who are often quite vulnerable, and attempts to move them towards more fulfilling and independent lifestyles. The young people are supported to develop the skills to avoid them becoming homeless and socially excluded.
What are your company’s plans for the future?
We are looking to expand the number of full time carers and those who can offer short term ‘respite’ placements so we can continue to provide high quality foster placements that achieve successful outcomes for young people placed with our carers.
Why is your company a success?
The success of the service is down to a team of dedicated staff, as well as experienced and committed carers who work together to provide stable and caring placements for young people.
