Introduction
Melin Homes is a registered social landlord that is a major provider of affordable homes in South East Wales. Melin has an innovative and dynamic outlook, and aims to make a positive difference to the communities in which it operates.
Can you explain more about what Melin Homes does?
As a social landlord, Melin not only provides properties for rent – we also build homes to rent or buy through our low-cost ownership scheme, and provide housing for people over the age of 55. Melin was founded in 2007, and from its offices in Pontypool manages over 3500 properties throughout Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Monmouthshire and Powys. However, we are not just about bricks and mortar – Melin aims to engage with and provide opportunities for all of its residents and communities.
What are Melin Homes’ goals?
Melin’s main goals are to be an excellent landlord and a leading developer of new affordable homes. We aim to be innovative and take a flexible approach to all of our services, whilst ensuring that people and communities are at the core of everything we do.
Why is Melin Homes a part of The Big Issue Cymru’s Big List?
Melin is a part of the Big List because we have a passion for providing help and opportunities for others. By joining the Big List, we can display our commitment to social responsibility, and at the same time contribute towards a worthy cause.
How does the ethos of Melin Homes fit in with that of The Big Issue Cymru?
Melin, like The Big Issue, has a commitment to helping people develop with pride and independence – whether it’s providing work experience and training for the unemployed, or offering low-cost housing to rent or buy.
What are Melin Homes’ plans for the future?
Melin plans to continue its mission to be a major provider of low-cost housing in South East Wales. In addition to this, we plan to extend our groundbreaking work within communities.
For example, this year:
- Melin Homes and Energy Saving Trust (EST) have been selected to deliver a green homes project worth £27million stretching from the bridge in South East Wales to the beach in the South West.
- Melin and EST will be working on the Arbed 2 ERDF project to install energy efficiency measures in homes and promote green skills and jobs.
- We will be implementing energy efficiency measures in up to 1000 homes each year with an annual budget of £9million.
Why is Melin Homes a success?
Melin Homes are a big success because on top of our desire to provide low-cost homes for a wide range of people, we are committed to helping our residents beyond just housing. The key to this success is the attitude of our staff, who are devoted to excellent customer service and have a can-do attitude.
