Join In - and give more time to grassroot sports
A year on from the riots in August 2011, we at Give More are making an urgent call for more people to give time, money or energy to community sport to inspire a generation and reverse the decline in sports participation among young people.
There’s a lot of evidence showing that sport is one of the best ways to engage people with their community, and an amazing way of lowering antisocial behaviour and crime.
Youth volunteers are vital in making that happen. Grassroots coaches and organisers find they get the benefits of involvement in a sport they are passionate about, as well as the satisfaction of knowing young people are becoming engaged.
Street Games (www.streetgames.org/) is an amazing organisation training thousands of volunteers, making sport more accessible and developing participation in disadvantaged communities. This amazing summer is the perfect time to get inspired. On the weekend of August 18 and 19, the ‘Join in’ weekend (www.joininuk.org) offers fun events across the country to celebrate local sport.
At Give More, over a 12-month period we’re trying encourage everyone to do a bit more, in whatever way they can, to give time, money and energy to whatever they are most interested in. The country has been galvanised by the Games, but the Olympics alone won’t increase sports participation – it is up to all of us.
