Dreams of a Life (12A)

How well do we truly know other people? That’s the question underlying this haunting documentary about Joyce Vincent, the 38-year-old Londoner whose body was discovered in her modest bedsit in 2003, some three years after dying there.

Talking to her friends, ex-lovers and colleagues, all of whom are incredulous that her death should have gone unnoticed for so long, director Carol Morley pieces together impressions and recollections of this attractive but vulnerable woman. The result is no more valid than the many other impressions of Joyce offered by those who knew her. The portrait that emerges here, however, is of a compelling, vivacious and gentle – if damaged – woman who touched many lives. This is an achingly compassionate and desperately moving film.
