Big Issue Foundation

Pete’s Story

Pete Mills has been a Trustee of The Big Issue Foundation since 2016. He is the Founder and Managing Director of SmartResponse Media and has formally held Directorships at The Specialist Works and JML. During his career he has specialised in direct response marketing on TV working with Brands, Multi-Channel Retailers and Travel Companies.

I was born in Camden Town and grew up in the 70s and 80s. This area was known for its massive issues with homelessness and I just happened to grow up in the middle of it. I always felt that I wanted to give something back if I could.

Homelessness isn’t a problem that’s getting any better- the reality of it is that the problem is getting measurably worse. In central London alone, we are surrounded by people in dire need. As The Big Issue Foundation recognises its 25th anniversary, I really celebrate that it can sustain and continue to give support to the people who need it the most.

On one level, it’s inspirational that The Big Issue Foundation are still trying to solve the problem 25 years later. By the same token, it’s very depressing that there seems to be more homelessness now than there was 25 years ago. What that highlights is the necessity to have an organisation like The Big Issue Foundation and the wider Big Issue group to ensure that there are opportunities to get people out of this situation. The tragedy of homelessness is that it is growing problem that needs our focus and attention. I think The Big Issue Foundation is an amazing idea- to help people who are trying to help themselves.

I’m really excited to be a part of The Big London Night Walk and I’m looking forward to raising some money. This is the first time I’ve ever fundraised for The Big Issue Foundation – I’d like to raise as much as I can because I just think it’s such a great cause.

The Big London Night Walk is a 25km walk through central London by night, taking place on Friday 6th March. You can support Pete’s fundraising by donating to his online giving page here.
