What links Orwell, the Ukrainian famine, Animal Farm, fake news and Trump?

Mr Jones will release in cinemas this week telling the story of journalist Gareth Jones. The remarkable tale behind the film has repercussions that can even be felt in the present-day White House

This week’s Big Issue brings you a remarkable tale that is almost a century in the making.

Mr Jones is released in cinemas this week, starring James Norton, Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Mawle as a certain George Orwell and directed by Polish-born, Oscar-nominated Agnieszka Holland.

The film tells the story of Gareth Jones, a journalist who fought through the fake news to uncover the famine in Ukraine and the horrors of Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union regime.

Fast forward to 2020 and Ukraine remains a pawn in the geopolitical chess game being played between Russia and the USA – as the “perfect phone call” behind President Donald Trump’s impeachment ably demonstrates.

In this week’s Big Issue magazine, we speak to sisters Andrea and Alexandra Chalupa to hear the story behind their family history, how the film came to be and how pro-Ukraine activist Alexandra became embroiled in the impeachment pantomime.

It’s an incredible story and how does it tie in to Orwell’s classic Animal Farm, which turns 75 this year?

You’ll have to buy this week’s Big Issue magazine to find out, available now from Big Issue vendors and The Big Issue Shop.
