Inside the Big Issue: We are what we eat

Every day, millions of Brits go hungry. In this week's food special, we dive into what can be done about it

Inside the Big Issue: We are what we eat

Building food security is a goal we can all get behind. At core is cost.

According to the ONS, when asked about the key important issues impacting Britain today, 89% of Brits said the cost of living. In the most recent ONS figures, until the end of June, nearly two-thirds of people reported the cost of living rose that month.

When you drill a little deeper, the reason becomes clear. The most common reason given for feeling it in the pocket remains the price of a food shop – 94% of people say so. That’s nearly everyone.

More recent figures don’t show any sign of changing. The Food Foundation, the organisation that’s trying to ensure everybody across the nation has a healthy and sustainable diet – a noble aim – tracks the weekly food basket cost. They’ve been doing it since 2022. They say that the weekly basket for a woman has risen by 27.4%. For a man it has risen by 30.2%. By every metric, food is becoming pricier and those with least are hit hardest.

In this week’s issue, we look at the problems and see from where the solutions can spring – whether it’s in organisations like Food Foundation, Gander or Big Grow – and dive into how we might feed a hungry nation. Dig in.

What else is in this week’s Big Issue?

Thousands of elderly and vulnerable care home residents hit with ‘revenge’ eviction notices

Elderly and vulnerable people have been receiving eviction notices from their care homes in their thousands over the last year, Big Issue has found. A total of 7,261 residents living in nursing and residential homes were given a ‘notice to quit’ between August 2024 and September 2025, a Freedom of Information request to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has revealed.

Edible insects: the (meal)worm that turned?

Two billion people around the world regularly eat insect protein. But insects are uncommon on Western menus. For a brief moment, it looked like that was about to change, and that we’d all be eating crickets. What happened?

Oliver Jeffers’ Letter to My Younger Self

The celebrated kids’ author left Troubles-era Northern Ireland for a creative NYC life. Now his focus is on making the world better.

“Since I became a father the intention to speak about the state of the world has become much, much stronger,” he told Big Issue.
