Turner Prize nominee David Shrigley designs cover for Big Issue creativity week special

A Shrigley original appears on the cover of this week’s Big Issue

Inside the Big Issue: Critical Hope.

Monday 18 May – Turner Prize shortlisted artist David Shrigley has designed a “delicious” exclusive cover for this week’s Big Issue.

A Shrigley original – ‘Extract the Juice from Everything’, featuring a cross-section of an orange in Shrigley’s trademark bright, abstract style – appears on the cover of this week’s Big Issue to mark Creativity and Wellbeing Week.

This week’s Big Issue is a creative health special and features exclusive contributions from a number of artists including Shrigley.

Leading arts campaigners including the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and the Royal Albert Hall’s first associate scientist Professor Daisy Fancourt have also written pieces for the special edition.

Shrigley, interviewed in the magazine, criticises the lack of opportunity and barriers to art in the UK. “It’s all very unfair,” he tells the Big Issue. “The Irish have it right with their Basic Income For Artists. The best idea they’ve had since Zero Guinness.”

Steven MacKenzie, Big Issue UK Editor, said: “This week’s edition of Big Issue is designed to get your creative juices flowing. There’s a lot squeezed in; from smashing plates to LEGO interpretations of homelessness, pieces by Professor Daisy Fancourt and Andy Burnham, all celebrate the amazing power of creativity.

“Thanks to those who have curated this special edition, especially Anna Woolf, Victoria Hume, Matt Peacock and, of course, David Shrigley for the delicious cover.”

The creativity week special of the Big Issue is on sale now from Big Issue vendors across the UK. You can also buy the edition from the Big Issue Shop.
