Our incredible ‘Flake News’ Donald Trump cover is one of 25 street paper covers up for the gong – and we need your support to win

The Big Issue’s ‘Flake News’ Donald Trump cover is up for an award – and we need a tiny hand to help us come out on top.

The incredible cover – which sees the US President reimagined as an ice cream – was a hit with protestors against his state visit last year.

Now, it is one of the 25 covers up for the International Network of Street Papers’ (INSP) People’s Cover Award with a public vote running as Trump is due to arrive in the UK for a second visit.

The new award will mark 25thanniversary of INSP – the international group that bring together more than 100 street papers from all over the world, including The Big Issue.

The public vote is open now with the winner set to be announced at the INSP Awards held at the annual Global Street Paper Summit in Hannover, Germany on Wednesday June 19.

After all, magazine covers are of vital importance to our vendors as they are out on the street selling the magazine. That’s why we work extremely hard on the cover every week, as Big Issue UK editor Paul McNamee explains.

“Street paper covers must act as billboards and markers of who we are. On the street, vendors have a tough enough job, with many people not keen to make eye contact. We need to make the cover work immediately,” he said.

“We ignore normal magazine cover tropes. They must be arresting, tempt readers in and reflect the outsider, non-establishment identity of the magazine. I’ve always looked to have covers that a reader will feel instinctively is Big Issue without knowing exactly why.

“We work for days, sometimes weeks, to craft our covers, and push as far as we can to get it right. If our vendors are putting themselves out there on the street, taking a risk to make a living, we owe it to them to make the product the very best it can be.”
