Top 5 great books given really great film adaptations – chosen by screenplay writer Moira Buffini

The best film adaptations that bring great fiction to life

The Hunger Games

As a screenplay writer, playwright and author, Moira Buffini knows a thing or two about film adaptations. Here are her favourites.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carré

Le Carré’s dysfunctional and desperately lonely spies beautifully brought to life in Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan’s luminous screenplay.

The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

These are such good big-budget action movies that manage to be true to Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster books and still be intimate and very moving. Cheers to all the screenwriters and to Jennifer Lawrence for her great central performance.

In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney

The screenplay of Moonlight was written by Barry Jenkins, based on McCraney’s semi-autobiographical play. You think adapting plays is going to be easy and it’s really hard. This is a near-perfect job of great humanity.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Austen’s novel in its best screen version by Deborah Moggach, directed by Joe Wright. A pitch-perfect production. My go-to film when I need crisps on the sofa and a sunny day.

The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean

Charlie Kaufman was commissioned to adapt The Orchid Thief, a non-fiction book set in the Florida swamps. Kaufman had writer’s block and ended up writing Adaptation, a weird and hilarious film about the act of writing itself, starring Nicolas Cage as himself.

Songlight by Moira Buffini is out on 29 August (Faber, £8.99). Most of these titles are available to buy from The Big Issue shop on Bookshop.org, which helps to support The Big Issue and independent bookshops.
