Do your socks protect orangutans? These ones do

Bare Kind socks protect oragutans

Lucy Jeffrey, founder of Bare Kind

In the first of our Meet the Makers series, we catch up with Lucy Jeffrey, the founder of Bare Kind.

She tells us about how her company can keep your toes toasty, as well as helping you have a positive environmental impact.

What can we find on your part of The Big Issue Shop?

Bamboo socks that save endangered animals! Every sock has an animal design that is linked to a conservation charity. For example, you can wear orangutans on your socks and know that 10 per cent of the profits are being donated to The Orangutan Foundation. The socks are incredibly soft, they are also sweat wicking and thermos regulating in nature, so they are great at keeping your feet fresh and cool in summer, but toasty in winter.

How do your products make a positive difference?

For every four pairs of orangutan socks sold, we can protect one acre of tropical forest for a whole year. And for every 128 pairs of bumblebee socks, we can plant enough wildflower seed to cover a rugby pitch’s worth of bee habitat.

What inspired you to start your company?

I want to leave a legacy that I am proud of, so I founded Bare Kind in 2018. It is these socks that I have committed to as I quit my banking job at the end of 2020 to do this full time! I truly believe in this product and the message behind it. I think we can save the world with socks.

What is the current big issue everyone should know about?

Climate change affects the ways bees smell plants, it can disorientate them and they will struggle to bring nectar back to the hive. We will lose our bees and with them our hope.
