Community champions are standing up to Stop Mass Homelessness

The Big Issue put the call out for local Community Champions to help us prevent thousands of people from losing their homes. More than 40 people have answered the call – and you can too

From Edinburgh to Truro, from Ipswich to Bristol, 44 people have answered The Big Issue’s call to help stop mass homelessness in communities around the UK.

The Big Issue’s campaign launched a month ago to urgently prevent thousands of people hit by the pandemic from losing their homes with rising energy prices, a reduction in universal credit and the end of the furlough scheme on the horizon.

As part of the campaign, The Big Issue called for community champions to take our campaign forward in local areas across the UK writing to MPs and councillors, organising events, and bringing creative ideas to take local action.

Tom, from south-west London, told The Big Issue he signed up for the campaign to inspire government action to prevent homelessness. He said: “We must stop the housing crisis – well done to The Big Issue on this important campaign.”

And Ellie, from Bristol, said she signed up to become a community champion to push for a suspension of no-fault evictions and for unfreezing local housing allowance rates. She said: “I am in full support of every proposal of this campaign.”

We’ll be sharing more about our community champions in the weeks to come. To get involved in supporting The Big Issue’s cause in your area and join more than 2,000 people who have signed our petition, head here
