From banning skinny jeans to therapy: 14 big ideas that will save the world

Do you have a big idea to save the world? From going to therapy to banning skinny jeans, here's what some of you think

What's your Big Idea to change the world? Left to Right: Rich, Frank, Ottilie.

World War Three, cost of living crisis, climate breakdown, bombings.

These days, a quick doomscroll on social media is enough to trigger an existential spiral. But amidst the deluge of bad news and horrible images, it’s important to maintain hope.

“We must never lose sight of hope,” urged UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the start of 2025. “And we must work to lift the lid on that hope through action. To make it real. To help it spread.”

The same message is relevant for 2026. With this in mind, Big Issue took to the streets to ask people their Big Idea to save the world. Here’s what they had to say.

Frank: Get everyone painting… Either painting or find a love you like. Like sport or whatever. Find an interest and get into it deeply. And why do you think that would change the world? Well, it would get people to concentrate on something constructive as opposed to looking out for trouble or or criticising others.

Ben: If everybody was gay, then the world would be a better place

Jessica: Everyone going to therapy if they can. I think that if everyone got some help and sorted their issues out, that the world would be a happier place. I’m guessing you’re including all the world leaders and things like that? Oh, especially the world leaders. Absolutely. Yeah. The men.

Julia: Maybe it’s so cliche but I should just mean just be like nice and kind of people. I think we’ve lost humility. I think we’ve lost patience for each other. We’ve lost a lot of kind of like things that make us human, essentially, we’re disconnected.

Dan: I’d make talking on dance floors illegal. Just dance. That’s what they’re there for. Tell me more about that? I just think it’s such a good release. And when you have people chatting on the dance floor, you know that they’re kind of disrupting the flow of it. And it’s good somatic therapy. It’s free and it’s flirty. And you can leave talking to a bar

Rich: I’m sort of an environmentalist and sort of climate activist. So I think the transition away from fossil fuels, for me, is, is a big thing. And just developing new technologies to be cleaner, greener.

Leon: I feel like everyone getting off of social media. I think social media is such a, like, a mess. And it just sparks the flame of so many. You know, people have this, like, big idea that crime is up in the UK, or, like, there’s so many inherent problems and blaming it on the wrong people. So I think perhaps social media would be my first thing I would look to repair in some way.

John: Keep it small. Keep it safe. Remember, if you feel hatred towards somebody, it’s actually, something to do with you, not to do with them. How easy is that to take that into practice? Really, really hard. And sometimes I fail. It’s just hard work. Hard work. And, try and listen to, listen to the other person. If you can listen to the other person and you can listen to yourself.

Christa: Well I mean, if I was a super villain, I would probably eradicate a lot of the human race. But that’s not practical and it’s really not very nice. So, I think we need to encourage education about sex and preventing unwanted pregnancies, and I think it’s really important that the arts be emphasised enough because a lot of people who can’t relate to ordinary life can often relate to the arts, and it saves people’s lives, and it helps people stay sane. And I think it’s crucial for the existence of humanity.

Chidinma: Everyone stop wearing skinny jeans.

Leander: Stop trying to follow the Americans, I think is our main one. It seems our policies are so far driven by the extreme, is trying to blame the lowest in society for the problems where we should be looking higher. I used to, vote conservative, I don’t anymore. I haven’t for many, many years was brought up in a very conservative household. Over the years, they’ve all changed, so much more centrist. Everything. We need to care for all worse off in this country, rather than caring for the the best of which we do at the moment, which I think is very, very unfair.

David: Get rid of nuclear weapons. To prevent such atrocities from happening. we got rid of the nuclear weapons, that way we won’t have to live under threat of nuclear war. And that ties in with, like, food stuff, which is going on currently in the world, as we see with Gaza as well as Israel and, Ukraine and Russia. Threat of nuclear war is such a massive issue at the moment so that’s why that’s what I would do is get rid of nuclear weapons, kind of chill it out.

Laura: Put someone in who has a real idea how Britain should be great again. We should not be afraid to fly our flags. And be afraid to call it racist just because we fly our British flag. I fly my English flag. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s my country. I’m proud of my flag. I’m proud of my country.

Ottilie: I think we should get rid of Nigel Farage. And his, like, ways of privatising the NHS and, taking advantage of lower class people who don’t understand the full impacts of everything from an economic standpoint.
