  • Big issue vendor, Paul Logan, inspired the new regular feature after sharing his idea for the feature with Big Issue Ambassador and friend of Jamie Oliver, Sophie Winkleman
  • Magazine is calling for people to share their low-cost recipe suggestions

Today (Monday 29th January), acclaimed chef and child health campaigner, Jamie Oliver has thrown his support behind a recipe collection in light of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in The Big Issue Magazine.

The collection was inspired by Big Issue vendor, Paul Logan, who sells the magazine in Cavendish Square in London after he met Actress and Big Issue Ambassador, Sophie Winkleman. Paul told Sophie that he saw great potential in a low-cost recipe section in the magazine and Sophie called on her good friend, Jamie, who jumped at the opportunity.

Jamie Oliver said: “I’ve always been a big fan of Big Issue. When I heard about Paul’s wish to have low-cost recipes in the magazine, I wanted to share these budget-friendly ones. With financial pressures as high as ever, knowing how to cook has never been more relevant. I’ve created these to help your money go further. Whether it’s making the most of your oven or freezer, or using store-cupboard ingredients, these flavour-packed favourites are nutritious and delicious.”

Sophie Winkleman, said: “I met vendor Paul Logan on the coldest day of the year. He told me he’d always harboured a dream for there to be a recipe page. We chatted more and it clearly was a brilliant idea – weekly inspiration on how to eat well on a super-tight budget. I called my friend Jamie when I got home to tell him about Paul. He thought it was a brilliant idea too, and offered to launch Paul’s idea with some recipes of his own. So well done Paul, huge thanks to Jamie and his team and here’s to good eating in 2024.”

Paul McNamee, Editor of The Big Issue, said: “Going with a good idea from that cold day that our brilliant Big Issue Ambassador, Sophie met Paul, we want to build a useful recipe collection, of delicious meals at pocket-friendly prices. We’re delighted that long-time friend of Big Issue Jamie Oliver is launching the collection today. We want to keep it going. Please send in your recipes with photos, we will consider them all!”

The Big Issue with the first recipe in the series is out now, please find your local vendor to buy a copy or subscribe online. Send your recipe with some photos to editorial@bigissue.com.
